Semiconductor technology (semiconductor sensor)
Definition: A semiconductor breathalyzer uses a sensor made of a semiconductor material (most commonly tin oxide). When alcohol vapors reach the sensor, its electrical resistance changes, and the device estimates the amount of alcohol based on this change.
Characteristics:
- responds to alcohol as well as other substances (smoke, perfume, mouthwash, acetone)
- result is rather indicative
- sensor wears out more quickly
- requires more frequent calibration
Use:
- personal, home checking
- lower-cost breathalyzers
Electrochemical technology (fuel cell)
Definition: An electrochemical breathalyzer uses an electrochemical sensor (fuel cell). Alcohol in the breath reacts with the electrodes, generating an electric current whose magnitude directly corresponds to the amount of alcohol.
Characteristics:
- responds almost exclusively to ethanol
- high accuracy and stability
- minimal influence from surrounding substances
- longer sensor lifespan
- calibration less frequent than with semiconductor sensors
Use:
- police testers
- professional and evidential measurement
- more expensive but more reliable devices
